T-VIPS Enables RTL Belgium to Transport HD Video from Studio to Playout in the Bandwidth Previously Required for SD
Oslo, Norway – September 09 2010
T-VIPS, a global leader in professional video contribution and distribution solutions, today announces that it has provided an HD transport solution to RTL Belgium to enable it to transmit content from its studios in Brussels to the RTL Group playout centre in Luxembourg.
The robust link, which went live at the beginning of September 2010, uses a highly redundant configuration of T-VIPS TVG430 HD-SDI to JPEG 2000 Gateways and T-VIPS CP541 Seamless TS Monitoring Switches. T-VIPS’ Belgium-based business partner, Video Promotion, provided RTL TVI with a robust and redundant JPEG2000 based video transport solution.
“As quality was such an important factor, we took the decision to use T-VIPS’ JPEG2000 wavelet compression to avoid the cascading problems associated with the DCT (Discrete Cosine Transform) coding and decoding of MPEG,” says Vincent Jeumont, Head of Systems and Projects at RTL TVI. “The bandwidth efficiency of JPEG2000 was also a great benefit. By adopting transport solutions from T-VIPS, the leader in JPEG2000, we have been able to use our current infrastructure to convey HD content within the same capacity we previously used for SD.”
“T-VIPS TVG430 with JPEG2000 compression enabled the bit rate of incoming uncompressed HD-SDI (Serial Digital Interface) video to be reduced from 1.485 Gbit/s to a more efficient 90 Mbit/s to 200 Mbit/s without sacrificing quality,” concludes Vincent Jeumont.

Another key requirement from RTL was an extremely high level of reliability. The RTL installation uses two independent ASI Transport Streams, with uninterrupted operation ensured through the use of T-VIPS’ CP541 Seamless TS Monitoring switch. The CP541 switches are installed in the RTL network after the JPEG2000 Gateways to secure redundancy at all levels. In the event of an issue with one link, the redundant combination of TVG430units, CP541 switches and dual links, ensures that signals are seamlessly interchanged, guaranteeing the highest possible quality of service.
